Smart read of poco terms
In sitting here and attempting to formulate my own opinions about “Nervous Conditions” by Tsitsi Dangarembga, I came to the conclusion that I am not going to allow Homi Bhaba’s theories on mimicry and ambivalence to take away from my enjoyment of Dangarembga’s novel. But I am also aware of the mixed feelings I experienced in reading this story, and now even more mixed up, post-Bhabha.
I was waiting for one, just one reference of the missionary schools in Zimbabwe as being somewhat problematic for Tambudzai’s people, but I didn’t get it. I wanted Tambu to question at some point why it is that her only option for education is through a missionary school, or why it is that poverty is so widespread throughout.
