I had forgotten about the “Gay Girl in Damascus” hoax scandal in 2011. It was a quick story that faded away even more quickly.
Well, for me.
I hadn’t considered all of the people–and the movement–that were hurt by this dude co-opting the voice of a young, gay, Syrian activist.
Fortunately, a new movie tells the story of this fiasco and shows us those who suffered at the hands of this marauder. The Amina Profile is worth watching to consider issues of voice, privilege, and writing. Bitch Flicks was kind enough to ask me to review the film, so here’s my longer consideration of it.
You can watch the film here. I would love to hear your thoughts on it.
